Subcutaneous Immunotherapy
Subcutaneous immunotherapy involves giving gradually increasing doses of the substances, or allergens, to which you are allergic. This is discovered through skin prick testing. Most patients receive allergy shots one to two times weekly initially during which the dose is slowly increased. Once a maintenance dose is reached the shots are spaced out to every other week and then once monthly. The total duration of therapy is typically three to five years, but can be longer in some circumstances. A typical build up schedule can take approximately 9 months to reach the maintenance dose at which point shots are spaced out. Live Oak Allergy, Asthma & Immunology also offers alternative schedules, including cluster immunotherapy, which allows you to reach your maintenance dose within 1-2 months.
